How to visualize a new finish in your room

1. Prepare a clear room photo

Take a photo from a position that shows the surface you want to change. For flooring or a carpet, include enough floor area to see it alongside nearby furniture. For wallpaper, face the wall at an angle that keeps most of it visible. For curtains, upholstery or blinds, include the item you want to update and some of its surroundings.

Use even lighting where possible. Strong glare, dark shadows and objects covering the surface can make a preview harder to judge. Keep the camera steady and avoid an extreme wide-angle view that stretches the edges of the room.

Forma accepts JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF files up to 10 MB and 40 megapixels. If your phone saves a different format, export a copy in one of these formats before uploading. You can also start with a room already in the saved library.

2. Choose a material image and category

Select the category that matches the surface you want to explore. Browse its finishes or use “Add material” to upload your own image. A clear material image with even lighting makes its color and texture easier to understand; avoid using a screenshot covered with labels or other objects.

Flooring

Choose an image that clearly shows the floor finish. Compare how its tone and direction sit beside your existing furniture.

Wallpaper

Use a clear view of the pattern. A preview can help you explore the overall mood, but verify repeat size against the supplier’s measurements.

Upholstery

Select a fabric image and a room photo with the furniture visible. Consider how the fabric relates to the floor, walls and other soft furnishings.

Curtains

Keep the existing curtain area visible in the room photo. Look at how the proposed color works around the window and adjacent wall.

Carpets

Use a photo with a clear floor area. Explore the color and texture, then check actual dimensions separately.

Window blinds

Choose a room photo where the blind is easy to see. Compare the finish with the window frame and surrounding decor.

Material uploads use the same formats and size limits as room photos. Uploaded images are saved in the shared library. Use images you have permission to share, and check room photos for personal details before uploading.

3. Generate a preview and compare the result

Once a room and material are selected, choose “Visualize my room.” Keep the page open while the image is prepared. Complex rooms can take several minutes; the studio shows progress while the request is running.

When the result is ready, use Original to view your starting photo, After to see the material preview, and Compare to move a slider between them. You can open the full image for a closer look. To explore another option, select a different material and generate another preview.

If the result is difficult to assess, try a brighter room photo or a clearer material image. Check that you selected the matching category and that the surface is visible in the room photo.

4. Turn your preview into a design decision

Look at the room as a whole: whether the finish complements your furniture, how much visual contrast it adds, and which details draw your attention. Changing one material at a time makes it easier to compare options.

The generated image is a visual reference, not a measured installation plan or an exact color match. Photo lighting, your screen and the rendering process can change the appearance of a material. Review physical samples in your room, confirm pattern scale and measure the surface before purchasing.
